“Music is our ultimate teacher”~ Wassily Kandinsky

2017 to 2023, music and art workshops at JulieArt were inspired by the work of Paul Klee. Klee, known for blending visual art with musical sensibility, often combined colored blocks to create a sense of color harmony similar to a musical composition. His deliberate selection of color palettes functioned much like choosing a musical key—sometimes using complementary color pairs for balance, and at other times selecting dissonant hues to create tension. This approach reflected his deep belief in the emotional and expressive power of both color and music, each capable of revealing deeper meaning.

2018 to 2023, student artwork created during the summer workshop – Exploration in Music and Painting – influenced by listening to classical and jazz. Students explored the concept of “painting sound” and expressing rhythm through abstract art. Guided by music, they learned to translate auditory experiences into visual form. Projects ranged from drawing instruments and painting shapes inspired by melodies, to using warm and cool hues to represent musical length, pitch, and notation. The workshops encouraged students to feel rhythm as they painted, fostering a multisensory approach to artistic expression.

2024 – “Art & Rhythm” Camp

In 2024, Tzeng Studio and JulieArt collaborated to create the Art & Rhythm camp, where students explored the connections between visual art and music theory. Inspired by Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, the camp focused on the “Spring” concerto, using it as a foundation for artistic exploration. Students learned that Vivaldi’s famous composition was not only inspired by the changing seasons, but also by a series of paintings by Marco Ricci, along with sonnets written by Vivaldi himself to illustrate the imagery of each season. Through this multidisciplinary approach, students created expressive “Spring” paintings that reflected the rhythms, moods, and scenes evoked by the music.

2025 – “Spring Strings” Workshop and ART & STRINGS Camp

Founded in 2010, Tzeng Studio launched a new group workshop, Spring Strings, offering both new and returning students an opportunity to explore music as a group, the summer all day camp ART & STRINGS explore a creative space for students to express the emotions and rhythms of music through painting and string instruments. Students performed and displayed the “Summer” Concerto paintings that reflected the balance, movement, desolate summer story while inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s relationship to music and painting through the expressive brushstroke, symbolism, form, and the colors associated by instrumental sounds.
